About the International Association for the History of Medicine
Advancing research, dialogue, and preservation in the global history of medicine.
Welcome
It is a privilege to welcome you to the International Association for the History of Medicine (IAHM) as its founding President.
Our Association was created from a simple conviction: that the history of medicine is not a luxury or a curiosity, but a vital lens through which we can understand who we are as practitioners, patients, and communities. From monastic hospitals and palm-leaf manuscripts to modern intensive care units, every generation has wrestled with illness, suffering, care, and hope. Our task is to document those struggles carefully, interpret them thoughtfully, and share them widely.Â
IAHM exists to bring together people who care about that task.
We are a scholarly, independent, and non-profit association. Our members include historians, clinicians, public health professionals, archivists, librarians, anthropologists, philosophers, students, and interested laypersons. We are deliberately interdisciplinary and international, with a special commitment to voices, sources, and perspectives from regions that have often been under-represented in global medical history.
Mission of the Association
The mission of the International Association for the History of Medicine is to advance rigorous, inclusive scholarship on the histories of medicine and health worldwide.
