Membership
Do I need a degree in history to join the Society?
No. Membership is open to anyone with a serious interest in the history of medicine, including clinicians, students, archivists, heritage professionals, and independent researchers. Respect for rigorous work and ethical engagement is what matters most.
Is the Society only focused on one country or region?
No. The Society is international in scope and welcomes work on any region of the world. We have a particular interest in promoting scholarship from under-represented regions and perspectives, but all geographic areas and periods are welcome.
What is the difference between Full and Student membership?
Full membership is intended for established professionals and researchers. Student membership is for those currently enrolled in a degree or within a defined early-career period. Student members enjoy reduced fees and targeted opportunities but are otherwise full participants in the Society’s activities.
How much are the membership fees?
Membership fees will be set by the Executive Board and approved at a General Meeting. The fee structure, including any concessions or institutional rates, will be published on this website once the Society’s accounts and payment systems are in place.
How do I pay my membership fee?
Once our membership portal is active, you will be able to pay online using the methods listed (such as bank transfer or card payment). Until then, interim instructions may be provided by the Secretariat for founding members.
Are membership fees refundable?
In general, membership fees are not refundable. In exceptional circumstances, the Executive Board may consider individual cases in line with the Society’s financial policies.
Will my membership automatically renew each year?
Automatic renewal options may be introduced when the online system is in place. Otherwise, you will receive reminders and will need to confirm your renewal each year.
How can I get more involved beyond paying membership fees?
Members are encouraged to:
- Submit proposals for panels, workshops, and publications
- Join committees or working groups when calls are announced
- Volunteer skills (for example, web, editorial, or translation support)
- Stand for election to the Executive Board when vacancies arise
Participation
Can institutions become members?
Yes. Institutional membership is intended for universities, libraries, archives, museums, professional bodies, and other organisations that wish to support and collaborate with the Society. Benefits and fees for institutional members will be specified separately.
